Facebook’s Graph API v2.1 reached the end of the 2-year deprecation window on 31 October, 2016.  If you’ve already upgraded your code to call API v2.2 or newer, your app shouldn’t be affected by these changes.  While this might sound scary, bearing in mind the change takes place on Halloween – it shouldn’t be too difficult to update.

We recommend updating all of your app software and plugins to the latest tested and deployed version – in this instance Graph API v2.8…

What’s new in v2.8?

There are some new features in v2.8 including a new ‘resumable’ upload API, which allows users to upload files a small piece at a time, allowing for greater reliability when connected to a site with a poor connection.  Handy if you’re on a mobile device (read more at https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api/resumable-upload-api).

Changes to feed targeting including the use of geo locations permanently, rather than relying on multiple or other means as it did before.  This is handy when targeting specific demographic areas when advertising.

Some big changes have come to Facebook Offers too, courtesy of their Marketing API, with it completely redesigned so its easier for people to use and redeem your promoted offers – ideal for retail customers.  If they don’t use your offer after looking at it, they’ll now be reminded via a notification before it expires.

Where can I find out more about the changes?

To find out more about Facebook’s changes, version by version, visit their dedicated changelog on their Facebook Developer web site at https://developers.facebook.com/docs/apps/changelog/.

I have a web site with SM&Co, what happens next?

We’ll be in touch to confirm everything has progressed as it should do, or if any changes need to be made to your app, site or plugin.  If you haven’t heard from us, you can be assured that nothing in this notification affects yours – but as always, you are free to get in touch to check…
